Vittorio Alfieri was one of the most important playwrights in Italian literature together with Goldoni. His adventurous life, made up of travel, love and the search for a dimension of freedom against any tyranny, makes him one of the precursors of the anxieties of Romanticism. In his autobiography "Vita (Life)" he confesses his incurable disquiet, his pride, his propensity for melancholy, his rejection of all tyranny and his transport and absolute dedication to his companion Luisa Stolberg, Countess of Albany.
